UCP VOTE TO DELAY PUBLIC INPUT ON THE PUBLIC HEALTH CARE ACT

EDMONTON--  The UCP rejected calls from NDP members of the Select Special Public Health Act Review Committee to invite key stakeholders and health care workers to present to the committee.

The UCP opposed two amendments inviting frontline workers, such as doctors, nurses and other stakeholders, such as the CEO of Cargill, David MacLennan. The UCP, however, believed it was appropriate to invite John Carpay’s Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms as one of only four guests.

NDP MLA Christina Gray moved a procedural motion to give the committee the financial ability to reach out to the public. However, the UCP voted to adjourn the meeting before that process could take place.

“I was disappointed but not surprised when the UCP voted not to hear from frontline healthcare workers. Doctors and nurses being ignored by this government is nothing new,” said Christina Gray. “but I was shocked when the UCP moved to end the meeting rather than invite public input into the committee’s work.  It is shameful that while health care workers--the heroes in the fight against COVID-19--are working tirelessly to protect Albertans that the UCP would rather rush to lunch than engage Albertans.”

Until another meeting is held the Legislative Assembly of Alberta will not be able to tell Albertans about the review and how they can provide input.  No future meetings of the Select Special Public Health Act Review Committee have been scheduled at this time.
