Judge Wyant’s report makes it clear: We need a full public inquiry into CorruptCare
EDMONTON — Alberta’s New Democrats are renewing their call for a full public inquiry into CorruptCare, following the release of Judge Wyant’s report this morning.
“This report tells us, and all Albertans, what we already knew: these serious health care corruption allegations about this UCP government are true, and there is even more to uncover,” says Naheed Nenshi, Leader of Alberta’s New Democrats. “We now need a full public inquiry to understand what else happened and who is responsible.”
The report revealed serious limitations that prevented a meaningful investigation, with Judge Wyant himself indicating he is not in the position to make a final and absolute determination on any wrongful interference. Additionally, the report clearly states that decisions around the procurement of children’s pain medication were problematic, and contracts for private surgical centres were improper.
“This is CorruptCare,” said Nenshi. “From buying Turkish Tylenol that nobody needed and now sits unused in warehouses, to contracting out private surgeries to friends of the government, Albertans deserve better.
“This report raises more questions than answers. Judge Wyant says himself that he could not make any final conclusions in his report because the UCP government limited his ability to do so. He could not compel testimony nor have witnesses testify under oath.”
Alberta’s New Democrats have repeatedly called for a public inquiry since the CorruptCare allegations surfaced in February this year. These serious allegations have also resulted in separate investigations by Alberta’s auditor general and the RCMP.
“We need to get to the bottom of this corruption,” said Nenshi. “And we can only do this through a full public inquiry, now.”
