UCP government must release report on health care corruption immediately

EDMONTON — After months of delays, the UCP government has once again failed to publicly release Justice Wyant’s report into the corruption allegations within Alberta’s health care system.

“This is a publicly funded report that has cost Albertans well over half a million dollars,” said Naheed Nenshi, Leader of Alberta’s New Democrats. “Albertans deserve answers. Instead, the Premier spent her day talking about license plates while continuing to hide a report that deals with matters of public interest. It’s a disgraceful display of misplaced priorities and a complete failure of leadership.”

On March 10, Minister of Justice Mickey Amery committed in the Alberta Legislature that Justice Wyant’s interim report would be posted on Alberta.ca on May 30. Since then, the government has repeatedly shifted the deadline without transparency or accountability.

“First, we asked for a full public inquiry into the CorruptCare scandal, and the government said no,” said Nenshi. “The UCP promised Albertans an interim report by May 30, then that deadline was pushed to the end of June, then to September 24 with the promise that the final report would be released on October 15. These endlessly shifting deadlines are absurd, and they demonstrate exactly why Alberta needs a real public inquiry.”

Alberta’s New Democrats have repeatedly called for a full public inquiry into the CorruptCare scandal. Such an inquiry would include the power to subpoena witness testimony under oath and enforce stricter transparency provisions.

“There’s only one reason a government would refuse to call a real inquiry: they have something to hide,” said Nenshi. “In the meantime, withholding this Wyant report is not just unethical; it’s a deliberate attempt to avoid accountability.”
