UCP government weakens TIER program
Nagwan Al-Guneid, Alberta’s New Democrat Shadow Minister for Energy and Minerals, issued the following statement in response to the UCP government weakening Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emission Reduction (TIER) program:
“Alberta’s industrial carbon pricing system, the TIER program, has attracted billions of dollars of cleantech investments that created projects and jobs while slashing emissions from Alberta’s heavy industries.
“Dow Chemicals, Air Products Net-Zero Hydrogen, Alberta Carbon Trunk Line, and Shell Polaris CCS are just a few examples of global multi-billion-dollar projects made possible because of Alberta’s industrial carbon pricing system.
“These aren’t just abstract dollar figures — they represent thousands of good-paying jobs for Albertans and long-term economic opportunity for the province.
"Alberta's carbon pricing system — from SGER to CCIR to TIER — has had bipartisan support and continuity across six Premiers: Stelmach, Redford, Hancock, Prentice, Notley, and Kenney. It survived six Premiers because it’s good policy that drives innovation and investment in Alberta while addressing climate change. Through rushed and limited consultations, the UCP government is weakening Canada’s most mature carbon market which will hurt investment and job creation.
Instead of aligning with Donald Trump’s policy agenda, the UCP government should be strengthening TIER to enhance Alberta’s investment climate, capture the fleeing cleantech investments from the US, boost innovation, reduce emissions, and most importantly, create thousands of jobs to help us grow again.”
