Alberta’s New Democrats honour 2SLGBTQIA+ Albertans with Pride flag drop on Alberta legislature grounds
Ahead of the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, Alberta’s New Democrats dropped a Pride flag from the office windows of the Queen Elizabeth II Building, continuing a powerful tradition of visibility, solidarity, and resistance on the legislature grounds.
“Stonewall was a spark, lit by courageous queer and trans people who refused to accept injustice,” said Naheed Nenshi, Leader of Alberta’s New Democrats. “Today, we honour that spirit by standing with 2SLGBTQIA+ Albertans and committing to the work ahead—work that spans education, health care, community safety, and economic opportunity.”
In the face of divisive rhetoric, extremist ideologies, and misinformation targeting the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, Alberta’s New Democrats remain committed to fighting for policies that advance equity, ensuring every Albertan has the opportunity to thrive.
“It goes without saying—so I’m going to say it—that this work doesn’t belong to the politicians. It belongs to the community,” said Nenshi. “For decades, organizations, activists, and everyday Albertans have been doing the work to make this province more inclusive, often without recognition and always with courage.
“This flag is for you: the trailblazers and the everyday heroes who have carried this movement forward. We see you, we stand with you, and we are proud to work alongside you as you lead the way toward a more inclusive Alberta.”
