WILL KENNEY, SHANDRO AND COPPING REJECT THE UCP’S CALL FOR PRIVATE HEALTHCARE?

EDMONTON - Premier Jason Kenney, Health Minister Tyler Shandro and Labour Minister Jason Copping need to immediately and publicly denounce a motion coming from the UCP convention seeking to undermine Alberta’s public healthcare system during a pandemic and public health crisis.

On Saturday, the UCP convention will vote on a policy package that includes a call to privatize Albertans healthcare system.

Policy 11, submitted by Copping’s own Calgary-Varsity constituency association, calls on the Government of Alberta to “support the option of a privately-funded and privately-managed healthcare system.”

“Albertans have a right to know: will Jason Kenney, Jason Copping and Tyler Shandro support Albertans public health care system, or support Americanizing the healthcare that Albertans have relied on during a pandemic?” asked David Shepherd, NDP Critic for Health.

“Kenney, Shandro and Copping have attacked doctors and nurses during a pandemic,” Shepherd said. “Shandro is supporting plans for a property developer to build a private hospital. They need to publicly denounce this UCP policy resolution or admit that two-tiered American-style health care was their plan all along.”
