SHANDRO MUST RESIGN FOLLOWING REVELATIONS OF ABUSE OF OFFICE AND NIGHT-TIME PHONE CALLS TO DOCTORS’ PERSONAL PHONES

EDMONTON -- Tyler Shandro must resign as Health Minister, following revelations that he abused his office to obtain the personal phone numbers of doctors in order to call them at night and argue about his recent cuts to doctors’ pay during a pandemic. At least one doctor has filed a complaint with the Privacy Commissioner.

“Tyler Shandro’s behaviour is utterly unacceptable,” said David Shepherd, NDP Health Critic. “He has appeared at night at the home of one doctor to berate him in front of his children about a social media meme, now he is prying doctors’ private phone numbers out of AHS in order to call them at night and argue about pay cuts.”

In a CBC News story released today, Tyler Shandro’s office confirmed he called two doctors at night on their personal phones after arguing with one of them at an event in Red Deer on Feb 26. An AHS official admitted it was inappropriate for the phone numbers to be shared with Shandro, and has reported the matter to the Alberta Medical Association.

The story comes only days after it came to light that Shandro went to the home of a Calgary doctor and yelled at him in his driveway, in front of his wife and children and neighbours. Shandro objected to one of the doctor’s social media posts.

“We can see a pattern of behaviour from Tyler Shandro,” said Shepherd. “He has utterly destroyed any hope of developing a relationship of trust and respect with physicians and other front-line health workers. His behaviour completely undermines the integrity of the office he holds. He must resign.”
