Alberta NDP Children Services Critic issued the following statement in response to the province of British Columbia’s child care announcement:

“Parents in British Columbia got some good news today as their government committed to implementing $10/day child care in partnership with the federal government.

“Where is the similar commitment from the Government of Alberta?

“High quality, accessible and affordable early learning and child care is critical to Alberta’s economic recovery. The impacts of COVID-19 have pushed women’s workforce participation down to levels we haven’t seen for decades. Today’s announcement will go a long way to helping educators, women and families in British Columbia. It’s incredibly frustrating that Alberta educators, women and families are being denied this help by the Kenney government.

“Jason Kenney must work with the federal government to guarantee funding to quickly implement affordable and accessible child care here in Alberta. Today we saw him preoccupied with managing his own internal UCP political problems, instead of working to make meaningful change for Alberta women and families.”
