Statement from Alberta NDP Leader Rachel Notley on National Indigenous People’s Day:

“June 21st is National Indigenous People’s Day. This is a day to honour and recognize the history, achievements and rich cultures of Indigenous Peoples throughout Canada. This day, as part of National Indigenous History Month, is an important time to celebrate First Nations, Inuit and Metis past, present, and future. Through learning and understanding the history of Indigenous Peoples we will be able to move forward in true partnership.

“This year we remember the children found buried at former residential schools. We remember the communities they were part of. Their families that they were torn away from. All that they would have become and the safety they deserved.

“2021 marks the 25th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day. May we always recognize the fundamental contributions that First Nations, Inuit and Metis people have made to the culture and identity of Alberta and Canada.”
