Sarah Hoffman, NDP Critic for Education, made the following statement today in response to news that several Alberta school boards have stated they will not pilot the draft K-6 curriculum:

“It comes as no surprise that several Alberta school boards, including the Edmonton Public School Board--the second-largest district in the province--do not want to participate in piloting Jason Kenney and Adriana LaGrange's disaster of a curriculum.

“Tens of thousands of students, parents, school board trustees, educational experts, Indigenous leaders, Metis peoples and more, have shared their deep concern with the draft released this week. This draft contains outdated and offensive language, it includes unscientific views on climate change, and it puts memorizing Anglo-Saxon European and American history ahead of Indigenous history.

“It doesn't have to be this way. We call on the UCP to go back to the drawing board and focus on preparing our students for the future, not the past."
