Response to the latest MNP Consumer Debt Index
Sharif Haji, Alberta New Democrat Shadow Minister for Affordability and Utilities, issued the following statement in response to the latest MNP Consumer Debt Index:
“Albertans work hard, and at the end of the day, they deserve to know they can take care of their families and build a good life.
“Sadly, nearly half of Albertans are within $200 of financial insolvency. Any responsible government would take that seriously. Disappointingly, this UCP government has not.
“Albertans are stuck paying some of the highest auto insurance rates in the country. They’re facing the fastest-growing rental rates, stagnating wages, and the highest youth unemployment in Canada. It’s no wonder so many are drowning in debt.
“Albertans need real relief now. That means action to bring down the cost of living and stop it from climbing even higher. It means creating good jobs within a diversified economy. It means real solutions to the housing crisis. And it means investing in strong public services so people aren’t forced to pay out of pocket for the care and support they should be able to count on.
“Albertans also need a government that stops pandering to extremists by pushing a separatist agenda. These reckless distractions are driving away jobs, scaring off investment, and creating deep uncertainty about Alberta’s future.
“Alberta’s New Democrat Caucus continues to hear from Albertans and is focused on what really matters: making life more affordable, strengthening public services, and creating opportunity and prosperity for all Albertans.”
