Nenshi and Brar officially join Alberta's New Democrat Caucus

Newly-elected Alberta’s New Democrat candidates Naheed Nenshi and Gurtej Singh Brar have taken their oaths and are sworn Members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.

Nenshi, MLA for Edmonton-Strathcona, won the seat with over 80 per cent of the vote.

“I want to thank the people of Edmonton-Strathcona for welcoming me so warmly and making me feel at home. I promise to be your number one advocate,” said Nenshi. “And to all Albertans, whether it’s jobs, affordability, public services or national unity, you deserve better, and together we will achieve better.”

Brar, the MLA for Edmonton-Ellerslie won his seat after voters there rejected the separatist UCP and Alberta Republican parties.

“I am happy I get to officially continue the work I have been doing in my community on issues important to residents of Edmonton-Ellerslie,” said Brar. “On the doors, people told me they are frustrated with the school lottery system, the fact the UCP government cancelled the south Edmonton hospital, and that they don’t feel safe in their neighbourhoods. I am committed to working with them to solve these issues.”

With 38 MLAs, the Alberta’s New Democrat Caucus is the largest Opposition Caucus in Alberta history and Naheed Nenshi has assumed his role as Leader of his Majesty’s Official Opposition. Christina Gray continues in her role as Official Opposition House Leader.
