NDP QUESTIONS CONSTITUTIONALITY OF UCP CUTS TO EDUCATION FUNDING, CALLS FOR EMERGENCY DEBATE

EDMONTON - Alberta’s NDP Official Opposition will put forward a motion for an emergency debate under Standing Order 42, on Tuesday afternoon, in response to Jason Kenney’s cold and heartless decision to lay off thousands of education staff right when they’re needed most.

If passed, the motion will allow members to debate whether the recent UCP cuts to education resulting in over 20,000 layoffs for Educational Assistants contravenes sections 11(3)and (4), 33(1)(d) and (e) of the Education Act, and Section 15(1) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Alberta’s NDP has received countless emails, messages, and phone calls from parents, teachers, and Educational Assistants who are devastated by the latest UCP cuts to Education and is seeking a reversal of the cut.
