NDP MOVES TO STRENGTHEN PROTECTIONS FOR MOBILE HOME TENANTS

Edmonton-- NDP Service Alberta Critic Jon Carson has written to the UCP Government outlining multiple amendments to Bill 3, Mobile Home Sites Tenancies Amendment Act, to address the concerns of Albertans in mobile home communities and strengthen their protections.

MLA Carson provided the amendments in advance in hopes of getting support from the Government.

“It is clear when speaking to mobile home owners and tenants that there needs to be a solution in this bill to problems around infrastructure,” Carson said. “I have spoken with people who cannot drive on roads in their communities because potholes are too large and snow does not get removed.

“It is an issue of public safety when emergency vehicles struggle to access a community.”

MLA Carson believes the $50,000 cap under the Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service (RTDRS) is inadequate to ensure that cases regarding infrastructure can be heard in an accessible and affordable manner. To ensure that the RTDRS can hear issues regarding infrastructure and safety, MLA Carson will move an amendment to effectively remove the $50,000 cap.

Additionally, in light of the ongoing public health emergency and the changes announced by the government regarding landlords and tenants, MLA Carson will also move amendments to make the RTDRS more accessible.

“Tenants need access to these dispute resolution services now — not in the fall.” Carson said. “The minister has announced many good changes to help tenants in this difficult time, but there will inevitably be complications and disputes. Furthermore, the courts are hearing less cases during the pandemic, so unless mobile home tenants have access to the RTDRS now, they will not have their concerns heard.”
