MEDIA STATEMENT: Alberta farmers need a solution to canola tariffs

Naheed Nenshi, Leader of Alberta’s New Democrats, issued the following statement in response to China’s tariffs on the canola industry:

“Canola producers have been warning for months that this action from China was a real possibility and that it would have devastating consequences. They would be forgiven for thinking the Alberta and federal governments have not taken these warnings seriously.

“And now, here we are. It is essential that both the provincial and federal governments work together to deal with this threat. Farmers and processors cannot be treated as pawns in a larger trade war. Governments must engage directly with China and implement programs to protect the producers who are being harmed.”
