Alberta drought situation requires urgent action

Heather Sweet, Alberta’s New Democrat Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation, issued the following statement urging action to address the drought situation:

“We need to come together to support Alberta’s agriculture producers dealing with crisis drought conditions across the province. Unfortunately, Danielle Smith and her incompetent UCP government are too busy with their sham ‘Alberta Next’ distraction to live up to their responsibilities.

“The increased drought conditions require a plan from the UCP government. Livestock needs access to water and feed, and the cost will have significant impacts on producers.

“Albertans, already dealing with the UCP government’s affordability crisis, will pay the price at grocery stores.

“Alberta's New Democrat Caucus would initiate water access policies for producers to support animal welfare. We would also activate the Canada Alberta drought livestock program under Agri-recovery.

“This is the least we can do to show producers that we are in this together and to protect Albertans from even higher costs to feed themselves and their families.”
