Alberta’s New Democrats call for fair deal for public education to end strike chaos

Statement issued by Amanda Chapman, Alberta New Democrat’s Shadow Minister for Education:

“With talks resuming today, we share hope with teachers, students, and families that the UCP government will come to the table with a fair and substantial offer that will properly fund Alberta’s public education system and end this strike chaos.

“The teachers strike was entirely preventable by the government since talks began this spring and has already gone on for too long. We’ve heard clearly and consistently from teachers, students and parents that classroom conditions have deteriorated and need to be addressed.

Teachers and educators need smaller classrooms and better resources to address their needs, and students need to be back in their classrooms, learning. It is entirely up to the UCP government to bring a deal forward that meets these needs and ensures Alberta’s public education system is funded properly, not last in the country.”
