Albertans deserve a government that supports teachers, parents and students

Amanda Chapman, Alberta’s New Democrat Shadow Minister of Education, issued the following statement about Alberta’s return to bargaining with teachers:

“Albertans deserve a government that supports teachers, parents and most of all, students. Instead, our education system has the lowest funding per student in Canada.

“So, what’s the government doing with the precious dollars they have? They’re spending it on an advertising campaign to vilify teachers.

“Let’s get serious. That’s a terrible waste of money that could be spent on reducing class sizes, raising per student funding and fairly compensating our excellent teachers.

“Alberta used to have the best education system in the world. But Danielle Smith and her heavy-handed and controlling UCP government have brought forward no solutions to address classroom conditions. They have made it perfectly clear that funding our students at the lowest level in the country, banning books and preventing girls from playing sports are their priorities.

“Today, both parties are back at the bargaining table where they should be. Parents want to see the government get a fair deal to prioritize students and make Alberta’s education system the best in the world, again.”
