Police carding accountability and reporting must be restored

David Shepherd, Alberta’s New Democrat Shadow Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Services responds to UCP government eliminating the need to report police carding incidents:

“Albertans deserve a government that is accountable to its citizens. Instead, the UCP government has eliminated the need for police to report incidents of carding.

“Time and again, the UCP government is choosing to put targets on the backs of racialized Albertans. Whether it’s blaming immigrants or placing citizenship markers on driver’s licences, the UCP keeps making their lives more difficult for political gain.

“One of the best ways we can support police to do their important work is to ensure we have clear, strong systems of accountability that help them maintain the trust of the public they serve.

“But the UCP government is extreme. They are heavy handed and controlling. They do not trust Albertans and are taking away our rights.

“The regulation requiring incidents of carding to be reported must be restored.

"All Albertans deserve a government that respects their rights.”
