Nicole Goehring, Alberta’s New Democrat Shadow Minister for Tourism and Sport reacts to the UCP government’s regulations banning trans women and girls from competing in Alberta

“The regulations in the UCP’s laughably named Fairness and Safety in Sport Act aren’t about protecting women's sport, they are about entrenching discrimination. Trans women and girls from Alberta and across Canada are no longer welcome to compete here.

“It’s also making it more difficult for any athlete to compete by setting up unnecessary regulations and casting doubt on athletes’ eligibility to participate in sport.

“The Smith government is forcing schools and sports organizations to police gender as part of its attack on transgendered Albertans, particularly kids.

“If the UCP was really interested in promoting ‘fairness and safety in sport’ it would create spaces where every athlete can thrive, and their success is determined by dedication and hard work.

“Instead, its building a sports culture in Alberta based on fear and discrimination.”
