Janet Eremenko, Alberta New Democrat Shadow Minister for Mental Health and Addictions, issued the following statement after 87 drug poisoning deaths in the Edmonton region in one month

“The preventable deaths of 87 people in Edmonton in March from drug poisoning is utterly inexcusable. These deaths are proof that UCP government policies are costing Albertans their lives.

“This UCP government is failing to keep people struggling with mental health and addiction issues safe. They have turned their backs on evidence-based models for addiction care, and the result is that more Albertans are dying.

“The UCP government cut $20 million from prevention and early intervention programs. There have been further cuts to front-line staffing and service programs, leaving those dealing with addiction nowhere to go.

“Despite a surplus, the UCP government has only built three of the 11 recovery communities they committed to and wait times to even get this treatment are months too long. When a substance as lethal as carfentanil is found in the drug supply, government must take immediate action.

“Prevention and early intervention are key to helping Albertans struggling with addiction. We need robust investments in permanent supportive housing and effective treatment options to help people suffering with addiction when they need it.”
