AFTER A WEEK OF DITHERING, KENNEY FINALLY BANS EVICTIONS

EDMONTON -- After more than a week of resisting calls for an eviction ban during the deadly coronavirus pandemic, Premier Jason Kenney finally caved today and brought in protections for  renters, making Alberta the last province to do so.

“I am relieved the Premier has realized what a terrible mistake he was making,” said Heather Sweet, NDP House Leader. “Albertans were aghast at the Premier’s earlier claims that Alberta families facing eviction in only a few days were criminals. It is good news for our province that he is finally listening to the advice of public health officials and making sure that renters still have a home to stay in.”

Alberta is the last of 10 Canadian provinces to announce a ban or delay on rental evictions. Dozens of American states and major cities have also brought in similar policies.

Sweet noted more action will be needed as the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting impacts on families will be realized for many months to come.

“I am proud of the work of our Official Opposition to press this issue,” Sweet said. “We will continue to propose and highlight common-sense ideas to help Alberta families and businesses get through this extraordinarily difficult time.”
