Fall 2016 - Bill 34: Electric Utilities Amendment Act, 2016

The Electric Utilities Amendment Act will help move Alberta's electricity system closer to the systems in place in most of North America.

Bill 34 passed third reading in the Legislature on December 31, 2016.

Key Points

This bill will help provide price stability as the province transitions its electricity system.

The existing electricity generation system operated on a supply-and-demand basis, which created big price spikes in electricity, and did not provide a stable opportunity for further investment in generation.

The Amendments will also allow the Balancing Pool to borrow money from the province to manage the transition.
