Spring 2016 - Bill 12: Aboriginal Consultation Levy Repeal Act

Bill 22, the Aboriginal Consultation Levy Act, was developed and passed in 2013.

First Nation leaders stated that they had not been properly consulted in the development of the Bill.

The Alberta government has stated that it wishes to engage with First Nations to enhance their consultation capacity on issues which may adversely affect their constitutionally protected Treaty Rights.

The repeal of Bill 22 will be an important step in that engagement.

Bill 12 passed third reading on May 19, 2016 and came into force May 27, 2016.
