Another 19,000 jobs lost under Kenney

Albertans are suffering another loss of 19,000 jobs in January despite the UCP’s $4.7 billion corporate handout.

“Premier Kenney and his UCP government promised to create jobs. They’ve failed. The core piece of their economic policy—a $4.7 billion gift to corporations—has failed,” said NDP Leader Rachel Notley.

Alberta’s unemployment rate The increase in the total number of jobs lost under the UCP’s corporate handout came after 19,000 jobs were lost in January, increasing the unemployment rate from seven per cent to 7.3 per cent.

“The Premier claims he’s ‘obsessed’ with creating jobs but let’s be honest, his real obsession is with this corporate handout and Albertans can see it is not creating jobs. Instead, we’ve seen job losses and investment flee to other jurisdictions,” said Notley.

“To make a bad situation worse, the UCP have cancelled programs to diversify our economy in order to pay for their corporate handout because they see diversification as a ‘long-term luxury.’ Albertans can’t wait. They need jobs now. The UCP needs to reverse their corporate handout and bring back these programs so we can get people back to work.”
