Good jobs begin with a good education
By Marg McCuaig-Boyd, MLA for Dunvegan-Central Peace-Notley
This month, our government has taken the first steps on a six-year journey to develop new Alberta curriculum across six subjects - Arts, Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies and Wellness.
Education is the cornerstone of a healthy economy. We will make sure that our curriculum provides students will the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in their future careers. Our review will focus on making sure students have the reading and math skills that they will need; make sure the history and perspectives of First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities are learnt by students at every grade level; and put more focus on important topics like financial literacy, personal wellness, and so on.
This is also the first time that the curriculum is being developed simultaneously in English and French. This is exciting work and is something we owe to our students to make sure they are Future Ready. We know that good jobs begin with a good education and that education is the cornerstone of a healthy economy. Albertans support this initiative and we are working closely with parents, teachers and students to have it accomplished.
Education is the cornerstone of a healthy economy
Its been far too long since a review has been undertaken about what was being taught in our classrooms. We are doing this for Alberta families. We want to hear what Albertans want to say and part of this will happen through a new survey that was launched on October 17 on the Alberta Education website. The survey will remain active until November 18, 2016 and is one of many pieces planned that will allow you to share your view on future curriculum. You can pick and choose which specific subject areas and specific grade levels you want to provide input on. I encourage you to log on and provide your feedback. There are also gatherings being held around the province where Albertans will come together to have a community conversation about curriculum while taking the survey.
If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact either of my constituency offices. We will also being updating our Facebook page with information as we get it. Search us on Facebook at Dunvegan-Central Peace-Notley Constituency.
Sincerely, Hon. Margaret McCuaig-Boyd, MLA, Dunvegan-Central Peace-Notley
