Fall 2016 - Bill 29: Vital Statistics and Life Events Modernization Act

Vital statistics are something that touch all of us at some point in our lives, whether registering a birth, getting married or dealing with a legal name change.

Bill 29 supports and enables changes to the way Vital Statistics are created and managed in our province, and are an acknowledgement of the principles of self-determination, social justice and inclusion.

The Bill will give parents more flexibility in choosing a last name for their child, respecting the right to use cultural naming conventions.

It will help parents who are experiencing the grief of stillbirth.

It will enable the creation of an online birth registration system to make it easier for parents and save public money.

It will make Alberta the first jurisdiction in Canada to recognize Albertans who choose to identify as neither male or female.

Bill 29 passed third reading in the Legislature on November 23, 2016.
