'Erin's Corner' From the Desk of MLA Erin Babcock

What a fabulous month July has been around the constituency! I started July celebrating Canada Day serving over 1000 pancakes in Spruce Grove at Heritage Park, a well-organized event hosted by the City of Spruce Grove. Moving on in the day, I headed back to Stony Plain to enjoy the wonderful art walk through Heritage Park, where as every year, local artists display their amazing talent, and this year was no exception, and of course the breathtaking cars at the annual Show and Shine downtown, always my personal favorite! The afternoon highlight was speaking at the Citizenship Ceremony hosted by Stony Plain at the Pavilion where we welcomed 60 new Canadian Citizens to the region.

July 4th I attended the launch of the TD Summer reading program at the Stony Plain Library. Reading is one of my passions, and I was honored to have the opportunity to read to the children. July 8th was the opening ceremony of the Enoch River Cree Pow Wow, a true celebration of our history. This event is one of the largest in Canada, and hosts many different Bands from the US and Canada to compete in drumming and dancing, honoring a long and traditional celebration of indigenous culture. A definite must see to mark on your calendar in the future. I also had the opportunity to join the Honorable Richard Feehan, Minister of Indigenous Relations, at Paul First Nation this past week and honored to be part of the discussion.

July 16th the Spruce Grove and District Agricultural Heritage Society hosted a breakfast appropriately named ‘Flapjacks at the Tracks’ as a fundraiser to preserve and restore the iconic Grain Elevator. A big thanks to all the volunteers that dedicate countless hours to hosting these events. It is the strength of volunteerism that keeps our community vibrant and engaged.

Always striving to improve my knowledge about the environment I attended the Pacific North West Economic Region Summit in Calgary to discuss the challenges and strengths of our region with international and provincial counterparts.

July 29th is the beginning of a fun filled weekend for the famous Blueberry Bluegrass Festival here in Stony Plain, and I hope to see you there.

Events coming up August in and around the constituency, on August 19th, the Cowboy Music and Poetry Festival at the Stony Plain Heritage Pavilion will get under way, and stayed tuned for September’s event in and around our constituency!
