Celebrating Alberta families
By Kim Schreiner, MLA Red Deer North.
February 20 is Family Day, and family is the cornerstone of our great province. Families form flourishing communities and are the foundation of strength and resilience that are incorporated within Alberta's third largest city.
Family has been fundamental to many initiatives, and I am proud of the programs that we have introduced and enhanced. They safeguard and improve aspects that make a difference in Albertans' lives.
The new Alberta Child Benefit (ACB) has enriched the lives of an estimated 200,000 children and their families by helping ensure nutritious food, warm coats, or other basic essentials that support our future's growth. Correlating is the Alberta Family Employment Tax Credit (AFETC) which provides assistance to low and middle-income working families. This program has been enhanced so that its impact affects 290,000 children directly.
Right here in my constituency of Red Deer North the Future Ready nutrition program was piloted at Fairview Elementary on Dec. 2, 2016. Good nutrition is pinnacle to learning and this project was launched in partnership with 14 school boards across the province. I am proud that Red Deer was one. Students are the foundation of our future and focusing on learning is sound resolution that prepares them for success. Information about this program can be found at www.alberta.ca or by calling our office at 403-342-2263.
Affordable child care is also important to a vibrant community. As a first step to providing $25-per-day child care, your government is working with non-profit organizations to develop 18 new Early Learning and Child Care Centres across the province. The new Children's Service Ministry will help support vulnerable children whose homes may no longer remain a safe place. Children are the future of Alberta and on February 20, I wish all Red Deerians a very happy Family day.
