Spring 2016 - Bill 8: Fair Trading Amendment Act
The Fair Trading Amendment Act is designed to bring regulatory organizations like the Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (AMVIC) under the oversight of the Ministry of Service Alberta. The mandate of AMVIC was to oversee automobile sales and service. Concerns have been raised in the past about its governance.
The amendments will allow the Minister of Service Alberta to:
- exercise increased oversight of delegated regulatory organizations
- issue orders related to reviews of those organizations.
AMVIC is currently the only delegated regulatory organization under the Fair Trading Act.
Bill 8 passed third reading on May 12, 2016 and came into force on May 27, 2016.
